Valentin Alt (Other spellings are Vallentin Oult) was born in Altdorf, Uri, Switzerland in 1701. His father was Johann Peter Alt and female parent, Maria Catharina (Haener) Alt.

His birthplace Altdorf is the majuscule of the "Canton Uri", existence located in "deepest Switzerland", since 1291. Altdorf is all-time known as the place where, according to the legend, William Tell shot the apple from his son'due south caput. This act by tradition happened on the marketplace, where in 1895, at the foot of an old tower (with rude frescoes commemorating the feat), there was gear up a fine bronze statue (by Richard Kissling of Zürich) of Tell and his son. The send on which he sailed across the Atlantic, the Davy, was racked by death and disease on its voyage: 160 of the passengers (nearly half) died en route. The ship's helm and both mates were among the casualties, which made information technology necessary for the send'due south carpenter to bring her into port. Valentin Alt and two of his children survived the journey, but it is possible that other members of the family perished forth the way.

In February. 1755, Valentin advertised in a Philadelphia newspaper that his state in Falkner Swamp was for auction, and in April of that year his daughter Elizabeth was baptized in York Co., Pennsylvania, which indicates that the family had made their movement west.

Valentin Alt did not live long on his York County farm. He signed his will (as 'Valti", the diminutive of Valentin which non-Germans often transcribe as "Felty") on 18 July 1755, and it was brought to probate in York Co., ten Jan. 1756.

Viii of his children survived him.

Valentin's widow, Maria Catharina, was 33 years old when he died. She was married once again, to Henry Conrad, whose land bordered on the York Co. state endemic past Valentine Alt, Maria Catharina died x Jun 1759 at the age of 36. [ii]
